Since 2013, I’ve coached over 300 small business owners. This is what I’ve discovered to be the foremost biggest mistake– having a great idea, product or service without a plan of how to get it in front of the people who need it.
In fact, I’ve learned most business owners haven’t even clearly defined their market. They say, “Everyone could use what I have.” Wrong answer!
Although from a high-level perspective, that may have some validity. For example, a funeral director or a realtor. And even some speakers have the ability to use their message in various markets. As one who has worked with over 100 clients across nine different industries, I know it is possible. But I didn’t start there.
I focused on a market, and while working with my targeted audience, other markets saw the value and requested my services—that’s how businesses grow.
I strongly encourage you to start with a strategic business brand development and marketing plan. By taking this action step first, you will have a clearer understanding of what steps you need to take on a day-to-day basis to grow your business.
Here are the first three steps I recommend:
1. Get clear on why you’re in business. This question helps define what problem you solve. It also provides a sneak peek in to your brand story.
2. Define your vision, mission and value proposition. By doing so you’ll know what you want to achieve, why you want to achieve it and what value you bring.
3. Write your brand story. I enjoy supporting clients who are stuck, overwhelmed and questioning their ability to successfully launch their business because they’ve purchased thousands of dollars in programs, but remain in first gear.
Their dream has yet to take shape because they aren’t clear on where they fit in the marketplace and how to launch. To build the brand story and to see the essence of how what you have connects with your market is like starting a fire with one strike of the match.
